You Wanna Be... A Loser Like Me!

"I'm proud to be different. It's the best thing about me." -- Kurt Hummel
"The only life worth living is one that you're really passionate about." -- Emma Pillsbury
"There's not much of a difference between a stadium full of cheering fans and an angry crowd screaming abuse at you. They're both just making a lot of noise. How you take it is up to you. Convince yourself they're cheering for you. You do that, and some day they will." -- Sue Sylvester

Glee is a hysterical show. There are countless one-liners that make us all laugh due to their extreme absurdity. Although, every now and then, Glee adopts a much more serious tone, and takes time to teach a lesson to all of its viewers. This is where my true love for the show comes in to play.

Put aside the music and the drama and you get a show that's purpose is like none other on TV - to provide a set of role models who are actual real people. Every character in Glee has realistic struggles - like Finn and his college problems, or Mike and his battle between his own dreams and his father's, and obviously Kurt, Santana, and Karofsky's struggle with being open about who they are.

While its easy for someone to idolize heroes like Spiderman, or celebrities like Sandra Bullock (two very random suggestions, I know), those people aren't necessarily relate-able. I know I personally don't swing around on webs, or star in thousands of movies. The thing about the kids on Glee is that while all of them have talent, all of them have flaws - flaws they aren't afraid to accept.

This is why Glee is playing a key role in educating our generation. It teaches us that it's okay to be flawed - in fact, your flaws are what differentiate you from everyone else. Glee teaches us that we can overcome everything that is working against us and accomplish that which we think is most impossible. Glee makes it a point to address those qualities that we are most ashamed of (like their appearance, or abilities) and prove that every part of us is beautiful. The perfect example of this is Glee's episode, "Born This Way." Not to mention, the first original song produced by the cast had a message that encouraged you to love the parts of you others hate the most - because those are the ones that will carry you the furthest.

And if that wasn't enough, Glee's message was emphasized even more in last summer's reality show, The Glee Project. It's no secret I love this show as well, and I'm sure almost everyone knows I think Damian McGinty is pretty much the single most awesome individual ever... but there is more behind my love of the show. The Glee Project teaches its viewers that who you are is special, and it is worth being!

I think Damian put it best when he explained that while competing in TGP, there was no point in trying to be anyone but yourself. Glee wants real people who have qualities that are worth showing to the world and worth writing for.

Bottom line - the Glee family teaches us that there is beauty in being yourself. There is no point in trying to be anyone else... everyone else is taken!
